RoseVilla Senior Living in Portland is a nationally recognized leader in sustainability and resiliency, with decades of Resident-led environmental stewardship, innovative design, renewable energy, and community-wide sustainability and resilience planning.
Sustainability practices may feel like a quickly growing fad with the increased popularity of hybrid cars and eco-friendly, biodegradable products becoming the norm. Sustainability as a norm, however, is a practice many of us once only dreamed of.
Prior to 1970, everyone fueled their vehicles with leaded gas. It was a time when factories were spewing smoke and sledge, and the smell of air pollution was commonly accepted (and expected) in the largest cities. When astronauts shared photos of Earth, the little, vulnerable blue planet, for the first time in history, it prompted a movement and call to action: citizens took it upon themselves to bring national awareness to issues around environmentalism, sustainability, recycling practices, toxic waste, and fume emissions, and our overuse of natural resources.
Seeing the planet from a new perspective revealed its fragility and value, inspiring nearly 20 million people from coast to coast to gather and demonstrate for a healthy and sustainable environment. On April 22, 1970, the very first Earth Day was born, marking the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
As this growing awareness reshaped society’s relationship with the environment, RoseVilla Senior Living began putting those values into action through long-term sustainability and resiliency practices that continue to guide the community today.
From Garden Roots to a Leader in Sustainability and Resilience
What started as a commitment to gardening and eco-friendly living has since become a mission at RoseVilla to be a leader in sustainability and resiliency.
RoseVilla’s Resident-led Green Team plays a central role in advancing sustainability and resilience across the community. The Resident-driven effort of more than 125 members collaborates with the RoseVilla Leadership Team to reduce the community’s environmental impact, address climate challenges, and integrate sustainability and resiliency into everyday life.
The Green Team leads a wide range of initiatives, including expert-led educational programs on renewable energy and climate science, waste reduction and recycling efforts, and campus-wide naturescaping projects that prioritize native plants, trees, and wildlife habitat. Residents also lead regional collaboration through the Green Team Consortium, bringing senior living communities together to share ideas, lessons learned, and practical approaches to sustainability and resilience.
Through Resident leadership, collaboration, and long-term planning, the Green Team has helped position RoseVilla as a recognized leader in sustainable and resilient senior living with a focus on meaningful environmental action at every stage of life.
Building Sustainable Neighborhoods
RoseVilla is recognized as a national leader in sustainable design for senior housing. Two of the community’s neighborhoods, The Oaks and Trillium Townhomes, are designed to be zero-energy and built to Passive House standards.
These neighborhoods are not only energy efficient, they are thoughtfully designed to encourage connection with nature and community. Shared courtyards, native plantings, and accessible outdoor spaces create places where Residents can live comfortably while maintaining a low environmental footprint.
The Flourish Project: A Roadmap for Sustainability and Resilience
RoseVilla recently launched The Flourish Project, a community-wide initiative that unites environmental stewardship and resilience. This initiative guides how RoseVilla brings together sustainability, resiliency, and holistic wellness.
The Flourish Project focuses on regenerative living, meaning that the efforts go beyond reducing impact to actively improving the environment. Projects include energy efficiency, water conservation, and reclamation through systems such as ROSIE (Recycled Organic Stuff is Everywhere), a water conservation system designed to filter and reuse greywater. ROSIE saves more than 300,000 gallons of potable water annually. Other projects include rainwater capture, habitat improvements, and an electric fleet of on-site vehicles.
Building for Sustainability, Resiliency, and Preparedness
Completed in 2025, the ROSE Port (Resilient Operations and Sustainable Energy) is helping RoseVilla prepare for the future. This solar-powered resiliency hub is the first of its kind in senior living in the Pacific Northwest. The structure captures solar energy, stores renewable power, purifies rainwater, and supports electric vehicle charging.
The ROSE Port is engineered to continue operating during extended outages caused by natural events such as heat waves, wildfires, storms, or seismic activity. The roof solar system and battery storage can power vital small devices, and the built-in rainwater system can provide drinking water during emergencies.
By planning for changing environmental conditions, RoseVilla is protecting the well-being of Residents and setting a model for communities nationwide.
Building Community Resilience Year-Round
Resident-led preparedness efforts, including the annual ROSE Refresh Party, encourage neighbors to update emergency plans, refresh supplies, and strengthen the connections that support community-wide resilience.
These initiatives reflect RoseVilla’s broader commitment to resilient senior living. By making emergency readiness part of daily life and long-term planning, RoseVilla continues to lead the way in building a safer, more resilient senior living community.
A Community That Leads by Example
